Thanksgiving at Sturtevant Camp 2011

FAQs

What do we do?
Hike in, cook lots, eat plenty, clean-up, nap whenever, play games outdoors and in, yak a whole lot, play more, nap more, eat more, hike home, satisfied, with stories to tell.

OK, what do we really do?

  • Hike 4.3 miles into Camp, carrying personal clothing and toiletries; be prepared for cool to cold and even wet weather. Good boots/sturdy shoes for sure.
  • Everyone shares in all the chores—althouh we tend to revert to traditional roles: mostly women cooking, mostly guys hauling firewood, everyone does the dishes, all are recruited for Camp projects (trail maintenance, etc.)
  • Competition happens: wicked ping-pong, badminton, horseshoes, and croquet; Monopoly, cards, etc.; and of course the Zip Line and Big Swing (not so competitive.)
  • There is traditionally a (pretty cheesy but hilarious) talent show: come prepared or be squared.

What’s the deal on sleeping arrangements?

  • Cabins with bunks/mattresses, sheets, pillow, blanket, wall heater. If you’re always chilly, bring another blanket or a sleeping bag* or a hibernating badger for extra heat.
  • Cabins use a common bathhouse with hot showers, etc. You bring a towel & toiletries. (No hair driers please.)
  • Reserve as a family or group and you’ll be in the same cabin, maybe with a few other people.
  • Reserve early and pay a little more to get the Retreat Lodge; has its own bathroom/shower, sleeps four in double-bunks + one double bed, total of six people.

When do we start & finish?

  • The package deal starts with dinner 6:30pm Wednesday, Nov.23rd, goes through the Thanksgiving Day feast, and wraps up with lunch on Friday the 25th. (If you’d like to stay through Saturday morning at the going rate, say when you register.)

What about the hiking?

  • Especially for first-timers, join the guided hike that will go in Wednesday mid-day (details when you register.) It’s a moderate hike for all ages that will pump your blood!

What’s included in the registration fee?

  • Everything described above—2 nights in Camp, bed linens, 2 breakfasts, lunches and dinners each (inclduing the Thanksgiving feast.) Parking at Chantry is not included.

What about parking?

  • Park at Adams Pack Station for $5/day, or buy a USFS Wilderness Pass (required) to park in the open lots at Chantry next to the Pack Station. Passes available at the Pack Station and many sporting good stores (REI, Sports Chalet, etc.)

*Can I get my stuff packed in on the burros?

What if it rains?

  • We eat more and cozy up to one another. (There are no refunds after Nov.18th.)

How do I make a reservation?

  • A mix of old school and new: send an e-mail to back Barb Witman’s address— (momdog1@pacbell.net). If you’re coming as a family or group, include all the names, genders (and if anybody snores.) Flag kids under 10 years old for special attention. If you’re coming late or want to stay over into Saturday, say so.
  • Barb will confirm your info and total amount due, then you’ll send a check for that amount to lock-in your reservation; the reservation isn’t real until your check is received & recorded.
  • Deadline for reservations is Nov.18th (sooner if we get booked up early.)
